Countervailing Power and Upstream Innovation

چکیده

We challenge the view that the presence of powerful buyers stifles suppliers’ incentives to innovate. Following Katz (1987), we model countervailing (or buyer) power as the ability of, in particular, large buyers to substitute away from a given supplier. We employ a bargaining framework and find that the presence of larger and more powerful buyers increases a supplier’s incentives to reduce marginal costs. We identify two main forces. First, we show that while the supplier’s total profits decrease in the presence of larger buyers, the supplier can extract a larger fraction of any incremental profits. Second, we find that by lowering its own marginal costs a supplier can reduce the value of buyers’ outside options and that this effect is also stronger if there are fewer but larger buyers.

Buyer Power and Product Innovation: Empirical Evidence from the German Food Sector

Substantial increases in retail concentration (particularly in Europe) raise concerns about the welfare implications for consumers. In a formal model, we argue that retailer market power reduces upstream firms incentives to introduce new products. On the basis of a survey of firms in German food manufacturing, the results of a negative binomial regression model supports the proposition of a det...

Countervailing power and input pricing : When is a waterbed effect likely ?

A downstream firm with countervailing power can extract a reduced price from an input supplier. A waterbed effect occurs if this price reduction leads the input supplier to raise the price that it charges another downstream firm. Policy makers have been concerned that this waterbed effect could undermine downstream competition, and it was considered in detail in the 2008 UK grocery inquiry. Thi...

An Innovation in Film Cooling of the Gas Turbine Blades Applying an Upstream Jet

A new design concept is introduced to control the near-wall integration between the hot-gas boundary layer and the cooling jets in order to enhance the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness of the gas turbine blades. In this new approach, another film cooling port, having a very low blowing ratio, which prevents formation of the counter-rotating vortex pare, is applied just upstream of the main ...

Against the Current: Countervailing Duties, Upstream Subsidies and the Trade Remedies Reform

Ambivalence underlies the U.S. trade policy on government participation in the marketplace. This ambivalence is evidenced by certain trade laws and agreements which are based on competing economic theories that simultaneously sanction free trade principles and government interventionist policies [2]. It is exemplified by certain countervailing duty (CVD) determinations made by the International...

Restructuring Agricultural Cooperatives

Changes in the market conditions for fruit and vegetables have induced Dutch cooperative auctions to restructure their sales and marketing activities. Nine auctions merged into VTN (VoedingsTuinbouw Nederland) and established the marketing organisation The Greenery BV. VTN/The Greenery has encountered problems in its relationship with the growers, which may undermine its stability. A model is p...
